About

Darrell Burnet began DSB Thoroughbreds in Wagga in early 2019. Darrell has been a keen racing enthusiast since as early as he can remember and remembers racing home from school each afternoon to always catch the last couple of races from the days meetings. His passion and knowledge on anything from English jumps racing to Australasian flat racing as well as his knowledge on jockeys and trainers all over the world is impressive and demonstrates his deep love and passion for horse racing. Darrell first worked for a number of trainers at Mornington, Victoria after moving from the UK in 2010 before relocating to the Riverina to complete a Bachelors Degree in Equine Science from Charles Sturt University.

“I first started in racing for Robbie Kingston, before moving onto bigger stables when I finished school and spent a lot of time with Group one winning trainers such as Matt Laurie and Jason Warren who also both started their careers breaking in as well”

After a short stint as a picnic jockey where height and weight limited his career, Darrell retired after riding one winner on the Robbie Kingston trained The Soprano.

Darrell moved to Wagga to go to university and began working for Gary Colvin who he now leases 28 boxes off and it was here Gary supported the creation of DSB Thoroughbreds.

Darrell never believed Wagga would be a home for life, however after breaking in a handful of youngsters and meeting his wife Brittany, Darrell realised that Wagga and Country NSW afforded the perfect opportunities. Shortly after, he took out his own trainers license with his first winner ‘Idle Fancy’ ridden by Blaike McDougall on New Years Day 2021. This win was followed by another 10 winners before he’d even accumulated 50 runners.

Fast forward a few years, and Darrell is now breaking in thoroughbreds for a range of the leading trainers, studs and bloodstock agents in the Southern Districts of NSW as well as interstate and international clients. He is continuing to rapidly grow his training business as well with 18 horses now to his name. With him and his wife in their late twenties DSB Thoroughbreds is only just getting started.
